Privacy
The short version: your writing stays on your disk unless you put it in the cloud, and nothing about what you write is ever sent to us.
The app on your computer
A local project is a folder on your disk. Bakspace does not upload it, index it elsewhere, or read it for any purpose other than showing it to you. The licence check sends your licence key and an identifier for the machine to our server so a key can be limited to a few machines; it sends nothing about the project.
Usage and error reports
Bakspace sends anonymous usage and error reports to PostHog, hosted in the European Union, so we can see which features are used and what breaks. This is on by default and there is one switch to turn it off, under Settings > Account > Usage and error reports.
What is sent: an anonymous install id, the feature name (for example project opened, document created, exported, backed up), the app version and operating system, and for errors the stack trace. What is never sent: document bodies, titles, synopses, file paths, email addresses or keys. Error messages are scrubbed of the same before they leave the machine.
The cloud, if you sign in
Signing in creates an account keyed by your email address. We then hold:
- your email address and the sign-in sessions for your machines,
- your licence key and the machines it is activated on,
- your subscription status, as reported to us by Paddle, who handle payment (we never see card numbers),
- every cloud project and every backup you send, stored as the same files that would be on your disk, in object storage,
- the identifiers and timestamps needed to serve them.
Nobody at Voidforge reads your projects. Access is limited to what is needed to run the service and to answer a support request you make.
Getting it back and deleting it
Under Settings > Account you can download every byte of your account as a zip, delete individual cloud projects and backups, or delete the whole account. Deletion is confirmed by a link sent to your email and removes the projects, backups, sessions and account record.
Sign-in links and licence keys are sent through Resend. They see your email address and the message; nothing else. The newsletter list on this site is also held in Resend; every letter has an unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing removes you from the list.
