Export

The manuscript as one file: Word, EPUB, PDF or Markdown, or the whole folder.

Export

File > Export (Cmd Shift E) takes every document in the manuscript that is included in compile and turns it into one file.

The Export dialog: format, preset, author, contact and scene break
  • Format: DOCX for Word, EPUB for e-readers, PDF, or Markdown as one plain text file. Folder is different; see below.
  • Preset, for Word, EPUB and PDF: Manuscript is double spaced, the way agents, editors and examiners ask for it; Ebook is single spaced and flows for a reader. Markdown has no preset or title page.
  • Author and Contact go on the manuscript title page.
  • Scene break is what appears between scenes inside a chapter, # unless you change it.

Preset, author, contact and scene break are kept with the project, so it remembers how it likes to be exported. Change them here or under Settings > Compile.

Parts and chapters

The shape of the manuscript in the binder becomes the shape of the book:

  • A folder directly in the manuscript is a chapter, titled by the folder. The documents in it run together, with the scene break between them.
  • A document directly in the manuscript is a chapter on its own.
  • A folder that holds folders is a part, and the folders in it are its chapters.

What is left out

Research, the Trash, and anything with Include in compile switched off, along with everything inside it. Comments and notes stay behind too; footnotes go with the text. A document that has not arrived from your sync service yet is left out, and export names it.

Folder

Folder saves the Manuscript folder as a zip: every Markdown file and image in it, exactly as they are on disk, comments and notes included and whatever is switched off in compile too. Tick Include synopsis, label and status to write those at the top of each file for another tool to read.
