Organising
The binder, folders as lists, text or cards, and the labels and statuses that sort them.
The binder
The binder has three parts:
- Manuscript is the book itself, in order. This is what gets exported.
- Research is everything beside it: characters, places, notes, anything. See Characters and places.
- Trash holds what you deleted until you empty it.
Cmd N makes a document and Cmd Shift N a folder, at the end of the manuscript. The buttons beside each part's name add one at the end of that part, and right-click a folder to add one inside it. Drag anything to move it or change its order. F2 renames, and Delete moves the selection to the Trash.
Right-click a document or folder for Rename and Move to trash. A folder adds New document inside and New folder inside, and anything in the manuscript adds Exclude from compile.
A folder as a list, text or cards
Select a folder and the page shows what is inside it, three ways. The choice is remembered.
- List: each document's title, the first line of its synopsis and its word count.
- Text: every document one after another, as one long page you can write in. Good for reading a chapter through.
- Cards: a corkboard. Edit a title or synopsis on its card, drag cards to change the order, and see each label as a coloured edge and each status at the foot.

The inspector
The inspector (Cmd Alt I) holds what a document is, as well as what it says:
- Title and Synopsis, which also show on its card.
- Label and Status, below.
- Keywords, comma separated. On a research note this field is Also called.
- Include in compile, for documents and folders in the manuscript. Switched off, it stays in the binder but is left out of exports, with everything inside it.
- The document's comments, who and what it mentions, its word and character counts, and when it was made and last changed.
Labels and statuses
A label is a coloured tag of your own, such as a point of view or a subplot. A status is how far along a document is, such as First draft or Revised. A document has at most one of each.
Click Label or Status in the inspector and type. The list narrows as you go. If nothing matches, Create makes a new one and sets it in one go. None clears it.

A new label gets a colour of its own. To change it, open the list again and pick one of the swatches under it.

To rename, recolour or remove them all in one place, use Settings > Labels and statuses. Removing one leaves the documents that had it with none.
The Trash
Anything you delete goes to the Trash in the binder, folders with everything inside them. Right-click it there to Restore it. Empty trash asks first, and takes a snapshot of the project before it deletes anything, so even that can be undone from History.
